  中科院南京地质古生物研究所现代古生物学和地层学国家重点实验室主任。国际地层委员会埃迪卡拉系分会选举委员,中国古生物学会常务理事,中国动物学会进化分会副主任,《Science Bulletin地球科学副主编,《古生物学报》副主编,《生物进化》科普杂志主编,《Palaeoworld》、《地层学杂志》和《微体古生物学报》编委。曾任中国微体古生物学会理事长,中国化石藻类委员会主任等。政协南京市第111213届委员会常委。 

  长期从事地球早期生命研究,做出了一系列具有国际影响的创新性成果。已发表科研论文130余篇,专著2部。主要成果刊登在国际重要学术刊物上,如“Science”论文4篇、“Nature4篇、“PNAS3篇、“Geology6篇等。 

  对埃迪卡拉纪“蓝田生物群”(距今约6亿年,安徽,休宁)进行了系统研究,认为它是迄今最古老的宏体多细胞生物群,揭示了新元古代大冰期结束后不久,宏体多细胞生物的出现、形态多样化和快速辐射的奇特演化过程(Nature2011)。国际早期生命研究同行认为该生物群“是地球上迄今最早的复杂宏体生物”,“为早期复杂宏体生命的研究打开了一个新窗口”(Nature470339-340)。 

  命名和深入研究了著名的“瓮安生物群”(距今约5.8亿年,贵州,瓮安)。在其中发现了最古老的珊瑚藻类化石和后生动物化石;发现了最古老的地衣化石,把这类生物的最早化石记录提前了近两亿年(Science2005),证实了现代分子生物学关于最早的地衣和真菌的起源时间发生在六亿年之前的推测,同时也预示着在维管植物登陆前的两亿年间,地衣可能已经对地表岩石圈进行了改造,并成为陆地生态系统建立的先行者。
